8/22 - Day 9 - A good day for a sail and a drive

While we were disappointed that we didn't take the Pictured Rocks Boat Tour last night, we were glad we didn't sail in rough weather. and, we had a backup plan for today already in place: store the coaches at the campground, do the boat tour in the morning, and move our travel time to later in the day. Although things dawned a little gray, the sun broke through quickly, gracing our leader's coach with a double rainbow.

Where's the pot o' gold?

The first order of the day was to get most of the coaches queued up in the campground's "holding area" until early afternoon. We then carpooled to the Munising Public Docks and were soon out on the water for the tour of the Pictured Rocks National Shoreline.

Munising Harbor is quiet and picturesque.

In queue...

The rock formations are mostly sandstone and develop fissures that lead to rock slides.  Here's one "in development"...

Quick: identify the face in the rock!

It's amazing that some of these formations stay upright.

This rock has a white pine growing on top, and the roots actually stretch back across the chasm, where rock was washed away just within that tree's lifetime.

Quick: identify the "local"!

"What a nice little cove"...

"Let's drive the boat right in here"!  Fortunately, winds were calm and the water depths are sufficient for this maneuver!

Quite a few kayaks were out, taking advantage of the nice weather.

Back at the Campground, we formed up in two waves and headed out for our next travel segment, about 100 miles east to the little town of Brimley, Michigan.  We were soon parked, thanks to the expert parking crew, and ready for "social hour" before heading across the street to the Bay Mills Casino for dinner.

  1. Love all your pictures, you seem to cover the "event" quit well.
