8/19 - Day 6 - Green Bay, Wisconsin, Part 1

We got an early start today, carpooling to the National Railroad Museum for a very informative tour. We had a chance to see several unique trains, from one used by Dwight Eisenhower when he was Allied Commander in Europe to a huge steam engine nicknamed "Big Boy" used to haul freight in the Utah/Wyoming mountains.

Recognize any logos here?

These lighted signs are called "drum heads" and were mounted on the front of special, usually long distance trains starting in the 1930s.

This is the salon car on the Eisenhower train from the UK.

After World War II, France sent a series of these small cars to express thanks for reconstruction efforts.  Each state has one today.

We wrapped up our visit with a short train ride around the museum grounds.

Lunch today was at the Titletown Brewing Company (excellent burgers and fries), and our final stop of the day, the Neville Public Museum, was right across the street. The first floor of the museum housed an exhibit about how Wisconsin soldiers were deployed during the Civil War. The upper level had a series of small sections showing the history of the area from prehistoric times through the current days. It was very well done and quite informative.
